High above with the Hungerburgbahn – experience Innsbruck from above

Start your day with a ride on the Hungerburgbahn. This modern funicular takes you directly from the city center up to the Hungerburg – and is a sight in itself: the stations were designed by world-renowned architect Zaha Hadid. Their sweeping forms are reminiscent of glaciers and ice. Opened in 2007, the railway has since received multiple awards.

From the Hungerburg, continue with the Seegrube cable car and finally the Hafelekar cable car up to the Hafelekar at 2,300 meters above sea level. The summit is considered Innsbruck’s most spectacular viewpoint: the city lies in the valley before you, while behind stretches the wild Karwendel mountain range – a nature park and a true paradise for mountain lovers. Whether summer or winter – up here you’ll find hiking, climbing, skiing, snowboarding, freeriding, or simply the joy of taking it all in.

Elisabeth’s Tip

If you’re looking for something extraordinary, mark the first Friday of the month: on this day, the Seegrube cable cars run until 11:30 pm – perfect for enjoying the stars above Innsbruck before gliding back down into the valley under the night lights.

Between history and splendor – the Golden Roof

Back down in the Old Town, you’ll find Innsbruck’s most famous landmark: the Golden Roof. Emperor Maximilian I had the magnificent oriel constructed between 1497 and 1500. The building is attributed to Nikolaus Türing the Elder, while the frescoes were painted by court artist Jörg Kölderer. The roof is especially famous for its 2,657 gilded copper shingles, which still gleam in the sunlight today.

Particularly fascinating are the eighteen sandstone reliefs on the oriel, which illustrate the transition from the late Gothic to the early Renaissance and are considered among Tyrol’s most important works of art. To protect them, the originals were replaced by copies in 1952. Six of the authentic reliefs have since been fully restored and are now on display in the Golden Roof Museum – a piece of history you can experience up close.

Tyrolean delights at the Stiftskeller

At midday, it’s time for a culinary break. The Stiftskeller, right in the heart of the Old Town, serves traditional Tyrolean cuisine in a rustic setting. Whether hearty dumplings, juicy roast pork, or a sweet Kaiserschmarrn – this is Tyrol as it should taste: authentic, honest, and served with plenty of Tyrolean charm.

Strolling and discovering – experience Innsbruck on foot

The afternoon belongs to the streets and squares. A walk through the Old Town reveals ornate bay windows, baroque façades, and small boutiques. Those who enjoy discovering regional products should also visit the Innsbruck Market Hall: here you’ll find fresh fruit and vegetables, Tyrolean specialties, and small stalls offering samples – for children, the colorful market stands and sweet treats are a true highlight.

To round off the day in comfort, stop by one of the cafés or wine taverns and soak in the city’s unique atmosphere.

That’s how a perfect Innsbruck day comes to an end – and from Apart Elisabeth in Mieming, you can be right in the middle of it all in no time.
